Long trek out west.......
Not without some adventure along the way, Susan and I have made it to Great Sand Dunes National Park and have had a great time.
A look back at how we got here.
We made it to Memphis the first day and were confronted with the remnants of Hurricane Laura. About 8:30, the tornado warnings went off. We could only imagine the camper becoming airborne with us in it on the way to Oz. It blew enough to shake the camper. We remained intact, thankfully.
The next night we drove to Alabama and stayed at Lake Eufala, Oklahoma, below is the sunset from that night.
The next night, we stayed in a small private campsite near Elk City, also in Oklahoma.
We had no reservations anywhere but did not have any problems finding places to stay. There are people out but not in an overwhelming way, few children. Everyone, except in Georgia is masked pretty well.
At this point we had two days before our coming here and found a great place in the Wet Mountains of Colorado, near Pueblo. We were getting tired of being hot. We stayed at the San Isabel Recreation area and it was beautiful and indeed much cooler, turned the heater on in the morning. There was a lake there and I fished some but without much luck.
On our way here, we stopped for a bit in Salida, Colorado, a tourist type town with a nice downtown. They have closed the main streets there and erected tents for restaurants. We ate our first restaurant meal since the pandemic.
We arrive here in the late afternoon, set up and I took a short hike to the dunes. In the morning, we got up and did a proper dune hike.
This morning, we rented a four wheel drive Jeep and rode up to the largest mountain pass in the area. It took almost two hours of bumping to get up there and we had about seven creek crossings.
So, that is about where we are. Tomorrow, we drive several hours to Delores, Colorado to see Mesa Verde National Park and some other sites. Take care, all.
